The IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers) is a non – profit, technical professional association of more than 365,000 individual members in approximately 150 countries. www.ieee.org.

Vision of the IEEE: To advance global prosperity by fostering technological innovation, enabling members’ careers and promoting community world – wide.

Mission of the IEEE: The IEEE promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession.

As one mechanism to promote the mission & vision of IEEE, the IEEE (with co-operation with its local sections, such as the IEEE Kenya Section) serves to organize conferences. One such major conference is IEEE AFRICON. Previous AFRICONs have been arranged in Nairobi (1983), Abidjan (1987), Mbabane (1992), Stellenbosch (1996), Cape Town (1999), George (2002) and Gaborone (2004).

Many scientists, engineers, students, professionals and technical staff, representing a variety of organizations such as universities, research institutes, ICT and telecommunication operators and equipment manufacturers have attended previous IEEE AFRICON events. As a conference, like AFRICON, has a major impact (due to short – term & long - term established collaboration with industry, government & Academia) in the country it takes place in. Previous AFRICONs have witnessed prominent dignitaries such as H.E Festus Mogae, President of the Republic of Botswana. In 2007 the Honorary Chair in Namibia was His Excellency H.L Pohamba, President of the Republic of Namibia. AFRICON 2009 aims to continue on this established trend to receive participants from 100 countries and hopes to develop greater synergy between the organizing parties, the IEEE South Africa Section and the IEEE Kenya Section.

The 2009 AFRICON will be organized by IEEE Kenya Section, IEEE South Africa, IEEE Region 8, University of Pretoria, ICT Board, Kenya ICT Federation (KIF) and Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA).
